Marcus Bleasdale wint Alexia-beurs
British photographer Marcus Bleasdale has won the Alexia Foundation's 2005 professional grant, a $15,000 prize. Erika Schultz, a senior journalism major at Northern Arizona University, has taken home first place in the foundation's student competition.
Bleasdale won for his plan to explore the effects of oil exploration in developing countries in Africa and remote areas in Russia. In his proposal, which can be viewed on the Alexia Web site, Bleasdale says the environmental and cultural impact of the ever-increasing demand for oil "is leading to some of the world's oldest communities being decimated and pushed toward virtual extinction."
